Volleyball team has successful break

As relaxing and much needed as the spring break was for many people, the CSUN athletic teams were unable to relax the same way.

After dispatching 15th ranked George Mason in three sets at CSUN, the men’s volleyball team took to the road and was in action in Fort Wayne, Indiana against Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne.

The IPFW Mastadons proved to be worthy competitors, but were unable to beat the streaking Matadors as eighth-ranked CSUN won its fourth and fifth consecutive matches. With the wins, CSUN improved its overall record to 14-10, but just 7-9 in conference.

On the first day, it took CSUN four games to dispatch the Mastadons 30-21, 27-30, 30-17 and 30-26. Senior Nils Nielsen had a team-high 24 kills in the win, while Brian White had 18.

Not to be outdone, the Mastadons Matt Zbyszewski went kill for kill with Nielsen, collecting 24 of his own. The difference on this day though was the Matadors had four other players with more than nine kills, while IPFW’s second leading player had just five.

Jeff Conover had a game-high 62 assists for the Matadors, while IPFW was led by Mike Daiga’s 37. For the match, CSUN had 75 kills compared to 40 for the Mastadons.

The next day, CSUN found the Mastadons to be a little easier, defeating them in straight sets 30-28, 30-22 and 30-26. With the straight set victory, CSUN has won nine of their last 10 games.

Nielsen had another excellent match with 19 kills and three aces. Again for IPFW, Zbyszewski tied Nielsen with a game-high 19 kills. But for the second day in a row, he was unable to carry the team by himself.

The Matadors were not as strong as they were the previous day, but lucky for them, neither were the Mastadons. Conover had 43 assists for CSUN, while Daiga had 36.

CSUN will put its five game winning streak on the line this weekend against fourth ranked Brigham Young, at the Matadome. BYU comes in with a 15-8 record, including 10-6 in conference play.
