The CSUN baseball team collected a season-high 20 hits en route to a 19-7 win over UC Riverside Tuesday afternoon at Riverside.

Ten different Matadors got hits, led by senior third baseman Alberto Quintana, who had six hits, four runs and three RBI. Quintana had three doubles among his career-high six hits as the Matadors broke open a close game, by scoring 11 runs in the final three innings.

The win was the second straight in conference for CSUN, following 14 consecutive losses to start the season. In addition to Quintana, junior Michael Paulk remained red-hot, going three for four with a three-run homer, drove in four runs and scored three more.

Paulk’s homer, his team-leading 10th of the season, came in the eighth inning and put the game out of reach. Designated hitter Jeff Tezak and catcher Adam Fleener each had two hits and three RBI, and right fielder John Voita scored four runs.

For Riverside, now 21-21 and 6-7 in conference, Nick Salotti continued his excellent season by going two for four with a homer and four RBI. Leadoff hitter Brett Bigler scored four times and right fielder Aaron Grant had three hits.

On the mound for CSUN, Matt Gaylord pitched only 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and six hits while striking out one to pick up the win, his second of the year. Kyle Jean came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out three in relief.

Jeremy Berg earned his first collegiate save by pitching three innings, allowing one run and striking out three as CSUN improved to 16-25-1 and 2-14 in conference.

For Riverside, seven different pitchers stepped to the mound and each gave up at least one run. Starter Jose Shaw took the loss, falling to 2-4 after pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits.

After Shaw left in the sixth, Adam Reifer and Taylor Bills came in to get the final two outs, but not before allowing four more runs.

Haley Winter pitched the seventh and allowed one run, Daniel Stange and Marc Rzepczynski pitched the eighth and gave up six runs and Chad Decker entered in the ninth, giving up two runs.

The Matadors don’t play their next Big West Conference game until May 13, when they host Pacific for three games.

In the meantime, CSUN has three upcoming games, including one against USC and one against Loyola Marymount. The other is against the NAIA’s No. 19 team, Point Loma Nazarene at Matador Field.
