Water Polo ends season by losing three

After winning their first game in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament, the CSUN water polo team lost its final three matches of the season.

With their 10-9 win against UC Irvine in the first round, CSUN pushed its record to 17-15, but after losing their final three matches they finished the season with a 17-18 record and No. 19 national ranking.

Against Irvine, junior Chari Christopher had another big game, collecting five goals in the one-point win. Fellow junior Erica Bonetti contributed three goals, while senior Genaye Mowrer and freshman Allison Brookes each had one goal.

After Irvine, the Matadors played top-ranked UCLA who defeated the Matadors 14-4 earlier in the season. After the Matadors ended the first quarter with a 2-1 lead, the Bruins outscored CSUN 13-2 the rest of the way to win again by that same 14-4 score.

Again Christopher led the way in defeat, this time scoring three goals while Brookes added the other. After staying somewhat close for three quarters, CSUN gave up six straight fourth quarter goals to let the Bruins pull away.

The Bruins victory was just one on their way to winning the conference championship. UCLA finished their perfect season with a 9-5 victory over No. 3 Stanford to cap their 30-0 season.

After falling to UCLA, CSUN played No. 5 Long Beach State for the second time this season and were again beaten by the 49ers 12-4. Christopher, Bonetti, Mowrer and Lynzy Klein each had a goal in the loss.

In the season’s final game, No. 13 San Diego State defeated CSUN in the seventh place game of the tournament 8-3. Michelle Keeley scored twice and Christopher rounded out her splendid season by adding another goal.

For the season, Christopher scored more goals than any other player in the MPS, with 74, and was fifth in the MPSF with a 2.11 goals per game average.

Brookes was second on the team with 39 goals and 30th in the MPSF with a 1.11 g.p.g. average. Junior goalkeeper Graziella Caredda’s 303 saves were the most in MPSF play and her 8.66 saves per game were third best.
