The Matadors snapped their eight game losing streak with a 9-3 win over Loyola Marymount University on Tuesday.
Northridge depended on their consistent first baseman, Jorge Andrade Jr., who went 3 for 4 and is batting .385 for the season. Edwin Quirarte got his second win of the season, improving to 2-3.
CSUN hadn’t won a game since March 3 against Texas Tech. The struggles of the CSUN Matador baseball team continued last weekend, and it was the Washington Huskies that further added to the pain.
The Huskies became the latest team to sweep the Matadors. Washington won game one 7-0, game two 2-1 and game three 9-2. The Huskies’ sweep sent the Matadors to its eighth straight loss and 10th in its last 11 games.
In game one, Washington struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning and one more in the second. The Huskies added one more in the sixth and three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Northridge left 12 runners on base.
In game two, pitcher Jimmy Jolicoeur had a solid day for the Matadors, going seven innings and striking out eight batters. Washington though got just enough to win the game. The Huskies loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning and Brian Pearl hit into a fielders’ choice, which enabled Matt Hague to score. Washington’s second run came when Curt Rindal scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Dunn. CSUN scored its run in the eighth when Huskies pitcher Jorden Merry balked with Jowen-James-Murray-Thornton with third base. The balk allowed Murray-Thornton to score and also broke Merry’s streak of consecutive scoreless innings at 22.
Game three saw CSUN take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Murray-Thornton singled to bring home John Parham. Anthony Reed also tried to score on the play, but was tagged out following a collision with Huskies catcher Joey Dunn at home plate.
The lead though didn’t last long. Washington tied the game in its half of the second, then broke the game wide open with three runs the following inning.
The Matadors are now 12-16 and will face Cal State Fullerton this weekend.
