Matadors’ season ends this weekend

The race for favorable positioning for the upcoming Big West Tournament reaches its climax this upcoming weekend, as the Matador men’s and women’s basketball teams approach the final week for the regular season with wins, seeding and byes on their minds.

The men’s team currently sits at 5-7 in conference play, tied for sixth with Pacific. The Matadors can still finish in fourth place, which would give them a first-round bye in the tournament, if they win their last two road games against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Thursday and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Northridge would also need Pacific to defeat UC Santa Barbara and lose to Cal Poly and also Long Beach State to beat UC Irvine to ensure a fourth-place finish.

The Women’s scenario is a little easier to figure out, as they are locked in a three-way tie for second place in the conference with Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, whom they host at the Matadome this week. The Matadors can lock up the second seed, which would give them a bye into the semifinals, if it defeats Cal Poly tonight and UCSB on Saturday evening. Thursday’s game with the Mustangs will start at 7 p.m. and Saturday’s game will start at 4 p.m.

Saturday’s game will also mark the final home game for CSUN’s seven seniors; Jazelle Burries, Megan Ching, Krisztina Fuleki, LaJoyce King, Jamie McCaa, Kristin O’Rourke and Ofa Tulikihihifo. All seven players will be honored following Saturday’s game.
