Approximately 1,100 people gathered in Hollywood on Sunday, June 24, demanding full rights for immigrants. The march, sponsored by the organization Act Now to Stop War ‘ End Racism (A.N.S.W.E.R.), peacefully wove through the streets of Hollywood under the watchful eye of a reported 500 members of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Protesters used a variety of symbolism to express the need for attention to their cause such passionate signs and flags representing several different Latin American countries. In addition, chants of “Si se puede,” which translates to “Yes it can be done,” echoed throughout the crowd.

“It is people standing up for themselves, it’s civil rights,” rally organizer Joe Delaplaine said.

The rally came on the heels of a Senate vote on a controversial immigration bill that would have tightened borders, required workplace identification and created a guest-worker program. In addition, the measure would have created a course of citizenship for the approximately 12 million people illegally in the United States. On June 28th, the bill was defeated 46-53 in the Senate, coming 14 votes short of the 60 needed to move the bill forward.
