D?j? vu for women’s volleyball as Matadors win first, then lose two

The CSUN women’s volleyball team had a weekend in Sacramento that pretty much resembled its opening weekend in Seattle, winning the first match of a pre-conference tournament only to drop its remaining two matches.

The Matadors staged a two-game comeback to defeat Manhattan in its first game of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational on Friday, but things unraveled from that point on, as it lost its final two matches, the first to Oregon State on Saturday morning and the second to the host Hornets later that night.

Against Manhattan, the Matadors saw the Jaspers win two hard-fought games, both by scores of 30-28. CSUN fought its way back into the match though, winning the third game 30-23 and the fourth 30-27. The Matadors capped their comeback with a 15-9 win in game five.

Freshman middle blocker Lynda Morales led the Matadors with 17 kills, junior middle blocker Val Kepler had 15 kills, junior outside hitter Harmony Burdine, freshman outside hitter Alex Johnson had 13 kills each and sophomore outside hitter Angela Hupp had 11.

CSUN looked to carry that momentum into its next match against Oregon State, but the Beavers had other ideas, as they defeated the Matadors in four sets. Oregon State took the first game 30-22, but CSUN came back to win game two 30-26. The Beavers, however, won games three and four, both by scores of 30-23.

Morales led the Matadors with 17 kills and Kepler had 13. Brittany Williams had her coming out party, as the freshman outside hitter from Ayala High School of Chino Hills smashed 14 kills.

CSUN had little time to recover from its loss to Oregon State, as it matched up against Sacramento State in its final match of the tournament. Right away, the Matadors found out why the Hornets have won 11 straight Big Sky Conference titles, as Sacramento State quickly dispatched the Matadors in four games.

The Hornets won game one handily 30-20 and dominated the second game, winning 30-9. CSUN managed to pull out a 31-29 sudden death win in game three, but Sacramento State proved to be too much to handle, as it closed out the match with a 30-20 win in game four.

Hupp led the Matadors with 12 kills while Johnson and Morales had 11 kills each.

CSUN travels south this weekend to participate in the University of San Diego Tournament. The Matadors start off on Friday at 5 p.m. against the fifth-ranked UCLA Bruins and will conclude with two matches on Saturday. The first match starts at 10 a.m. against the host Toreros, currently ranked 18th, and the last match will be against the Pittsburgh Panthers at 5 p.m.
