Playing the field

Mattias Bonvehi began his career as a Matador soccer player this semester. The freshman midfielder, who played for El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, is on the 29-man roster that’ll be battling this season to make it back to the NCAA tournament at the end of November.

As a freshman, Bonvehi will have to persevere in order to get playing time, much less make the starting team. He’s going up against seniors who have played under Head Coach Terry Davila for the past couple of years and know the system of play.

But Bonvehi is up for the challenge. Born to Argentinean immigrants, he is the youngest of seven siblings. All of his brothers play soccer, and he learns from them. With the help of his family, he hopes to overcome the adversity he faces this season, and to earn a place on the starting squad.
