How to save with your CSUN ID

Many are unaware of what a CSUN ID can do for them and where they can use it.
Saving money is undoubtedly at least somewhat important to the CSUN community and although the phrase ‘crisis on Wall Street’ may not hit home for many of us, the phrase ‘$3.60 for a gallon of gas’ sure does. So when necessities become splurges, here are some ways to save.

Congratulations! You got a CSUN student ID. You stood in line, paid the fee, took the picture and now you have a plastic card featuring your face next to the Oviatt Library. So what? Your student ID does double as a library card (perhaps the motivation for that background) but it also does a lot more. It’s amazing what you can save with that five-dollar card.

Some students have used their CSUN ID in the past but slowly many vendors stopped offering discounts and they became insecure about asking for a discount.

Daniel Cruz, an accounting major, said he stopped bringing his CSUN ID with him a while ago but would like to know where he can get student discounts.

By walking to retailers close to campus and asking what types of deals they have many are happy to respond to the question. Offering up discounts for students, CSUN neighbors are here to help during these trying times. A few even started to offer discounts as a result of being asked.

In this stormy economic climate it’s a relief that some businesses are sympathetic to a student’s economic situation. Not all limit their discounts to students, many vendors are offering discounts to faculty and staff as well. The most helpful advice to take away from this is to simply ask. Many local small businesses are willing to consider discounts to students even if they don’t have an existing policy. Usually this happens when the owner of the business is closely tied to its operation (non corporate chains). Discounts can also be helpful to the vendor. Shireen Spencer a recreation therapy major believes a lot of students would be more inclined to go where discounts are offered.

To cash in on any of these discount offers don’t forget your ID card.
