Local man dies in stabbing after leaving party held by CSUN students

After leaving a birthday party held by several CSUN students, 20-year-old Hayk Oganyan was killed and his friend was stabbed late Saturday night near the 8800 block of Corbin Avenue.

Oganyan died a short time after arriving at Northridge Hospital. He suffered two stab wounds in his neck and torso. Oganyan was a Hollywood resident, said Detective Mike Fesperman of the Los Angeles Police Department.

His friend was also stabbed in the torso, but stabilized and was released from the hospital.
Witness accounts described the suspects as three Hispanic males in their early 20s with shaved heads who demanded the victims’ wallets before stabbing them, authorities said.

‘They gave them their property, but they were still stabbed,’ said Fesperman.

Corbin is a well-lit main street and a resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the victims were stabbed on Gersham, a smaller street off Corbin and came back to the house to help.

‘I feel pretty upset about it. It was completely unprovoked. It could have just as easily been any one of us,’ said John Wright, 21, finance major who lives at the house where the party was held.

Wright said they often walked at night, stopped by a store, but they no longer feel safe. ‘We feel completely unsafe. All doors are locked all the time.’

Thomas Ruggles, 47, said he has lived in the house next door for most of his life. ‘I’ve walked that side street about 50,000 times. I’ve never heard of anything like that happen.’

‘You don’t go out unless you really have to,’ said Vera Prizant, 74, who has been a resident of the area for 39 years. ‘We walk our dog every night, but we’ll have to be more careful.’

A memorial with flowers and candles was setup on the lawn where Oganyan laid bleeding.
