Rebecca Gever can’t imagine life without music. Gever, a 20-year-old vocal performance major, is president of the Vocal Percussion Radio club. She is also a lifeguard and swim instructor, and volunteers at a hospital when she is not on campus.

Gever wanted to get involved in campus life, but it wasn’t until last year when she joined Vocal Percussion Radio that she found a perfect fit. Vocal Percussion Radio features a cappella singers with a human beat box accompaniment providing the beats and rhythms. Although Gever does sing with instrumental accompaniment, singing a cappella gives the music a completely different vibe.

“It’s nice to work as a team with the other singers. It’s a cool feeling,” Gever said.

As president, Gever organizes retreats and finds venues for the club to perform, usually around various locations on campus.

“I love this club so much and I want it to go places,” said Gever. “I want to be the one to push it there.”

Gever has been singing for nine years, but it wasn’t until her second year of college that she realized music was vital to her.

“I was undeclared throughout my freshman year and very unhappy without music, so I decided I just had to do it,” Gever said.

During the summer, she decided to become a camp counselor.

“I love working with kids and I wanted a job where I could be outside all the time,” said Gever. “Plus I’m a lifeguard and swim instructor at home so I was already fit for the job.”

Looking through the newspaper, a job opening for camp counselor caught her eye. She packed her bags and left for Rock Hill, N.Y., to work as a counselor at Iroquois Springs summer camp. She worked with children ages six to 15 for eight weeks.

After graduation, Gever plans to enroll in the accelerated nursing program on campus. While in the program, she also plans to attend cosmetology school to do hair, “I have a lot of interests,” she said, laughing.

In addition to her extracurricular activities, Gever is learning to play three different instruments: the piano, guitar and trombone. “I don’t sleep very much,” Gever said.

Gever may have a hectic life but she still finds time to relax with friends, even though she said, “I don’t know what that word means.” Listening to Maria Mena or Ingrid Michaelson, hanging with friends, or going for a swim is how Gever winds down.

“If you could throw in a pool and some good music I’d be all set,” she said.
