Coming to a theater near you

Looking for something to do this weekend? There are too many exciting opportunities at the theater this weekend for you to miss.

First, Kurt Weill’s opera based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play “Street Scene” opens on Friday Oct. 23 in Nordhoff Hall’s Campus Theatre. Don’t let the word “opera” scare you, Street Scene fuses the styles of traditional opera and musical theater along with a jazz and blues flare. Come hear the story of life as a newcomer to the United States during the early 20th century. Professor Garry Lennon and David Aks present a classic story of big dreams in an even bigger city.

Also opening on Friday is John Steinbeck’s timeless tale, “Of Mice and Men” presented by the Barter Theatre Company at the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall. The heartwarming and tragic story of George and Lennie’s quest for the American dream comes to life in Barter’s production. Actor Robert Porterfield founded the Barter Theatre Company during the Great Depression. The company began its life presenting plays in which one could use produce as admission.

Saturday, Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers are guaranteed to get your hips swaying with their clever blend of swing, salsa, jazz, blues and R&B. Lavay and her Skillet Lickers have been touring the country to some of the biggest jazz festivals and headline at some of San Francisco’s hottest jazz clubs.

It seems like there’s something for everyone this weekend on campus. Student tickets are available for all shows, but space is limited. Take advantage of your student discount and get your tickets early. Call (818) 677-2488 or visit the USU Box Office for tickets. Blow off a little steam after your midterms this weekend and take advantage of all the great theatrical opportunities at your fingertips, and I hope to be seeing you at the theater.
