Students gathered around a table at the Plaza Del Sol courtyard to participate in making crafts for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 8.

Craft Corners is an event organized by the University Student Union’s Union Program Council (UPC). UPC is dedicated to creating and presenting events and programs for students.

The colorful table of crafts attracted a substantial amount of students. The participants had a chance to make cards and notes to show their support for cancer patients and were given pins to acknowledge their participation.

Jessica Balfour, co-chair of UPC and coordinator of Craft Corners, talked about the importance of spreading awareness of the issue.

“It might not affect people our age, but it can affect our moms and grandmas,” Balfour said.

The Craft Corners is a very good way to “give back to the community and this year we wanted (something that had) an educational purpose,” she explained.

Three more Crafts Corners are in store for mid-October and December. El Dia De Los Muertos or The Day of the Dead themed craft corner will take place on the Oct. 20 and a Human Rights themed craft corner is scheduled for December.

UPC general member Lilia Tejeda was one of the volunteers at the event. She described last month’s reggae themed craft corner, which included students making crafts using beads while listening to reggae music.

This month’s event focused on a serious issue and the students seemed to be happy to take part in sending their good thoughts and wishes.

“The students are liking the idea of creating a card and leaving it with us so we can send it to cancer patients,” Tejeda said.
