A.S. to get involved with the annual recognition conference

Associated Students (A.S) discussed Tuesday its participation in the Annual Recognition Conference hosted by the Matador Involvement Center (MIC) for student organizations on campus.

Augie Garibay, activities coordinator for clubs and organization at the matador involvement center, said A.S. involvement in the conference was very important to student organizations.

“They are the advocates for our students, and in a sense, a formalized government on campus,” Garibay said.

Garibay said the conference would have multiple workshops that range from building leadership skills, to A.S. accounting and funding procedures for clubs.

“I have a passion for ensuing our leader’s success on and off campus,” Garibay said. “The workshops help keep clubs and organizations compliant with standards set by the MIC, the A.S., the office of student affairs, and the chancellor’s office.”

He added that it was also important for student organizations to support A.S. by attending Senate meetings.

“It’s important for student organizations to be present when requesting money,” Garibay said. “I think it speaks volumes when an organization can put a face with their request.”

David Crandall, A.S. general manager, said he encouraged Senate members to be the ambassadors for student organizations.

“We don’t have an official liaison between A.S. and student organizations, but Senate members can take the initiative to speak up for student organizations,” Crandall said.

Crandall added A.S. Senate members should attend the conference because the organizations on campus know a lot about what is going on with other clubs.

“Budget wise is where we hear about the student organizations, but the conference is a chance to speak with several student leaders,” Crandall said.

A.S. unanimously voted to allocate funding to the following clubs and organizations:

  • Eta Sigma Gamma- allocated $1,000 for health and science fair and sponsoring an autism high school student CSUN visit.

  • Student Panels for an International Curriculum and Education (SPICE) – allocated $1600 for panel presentations.
  • Student Advertising Graphic Association (SAGA) – allocated $1,575 for portfolio review, impromptu design tournament, and motion graphics guest speaker.
