Confident Matadors try to make it two straight against Pepperdine

Following their explosive 4-0 victory against Saint Joseph’s University, the Matadors (1-2) look to start a winning streak when they  host  Pepperdine University (2-1)  this Friday night at Matador Field in a non-conference battle.

Northridge will try to get payback from the last time the two teams met in 2007 when CSUN fell 3-1. The Waves lead the all-time series and have won seven of the nine games played since 1995, with the other two games ending in draws.

“We are definitely out for revenge, we want to make sure that (Pepperdine) does not score against us,” freshman defender Wendy Warner said.

The Waves ended their 2009 season with an overall record of 11-7-1 and are a strong offensive team. In their three games played this season the Waves are averaging two goals per game and are 18-33 in shot on goal attempts.

The Matadors will have to keep a watch out for offensive threats junior forward Michelle Spacciapolli and junior forward Laura Cole.

Spacciapolli is a transfer from Boston College returning for her second year with Pepperdine. Last season she received All-WCC Second Team honors for being the second leading scorer on Pepperdine’s roster, ranking in nine points with four goals and one assist.  This year she has already scored her first goal and has been extremely aggressive at the net.

Cole, in her two years with the Waves, has recorded eight goals, two of them this season, and has put 31 shots on goal in her career. She is a vital part of Pepperdine’s offense and will look to be active early on in the match.

The Matadors have confidence on their side and are not worried about the upcoming match. The team feels that they will be able to stop Pepperdine in their tracks and record their first official win against the Waves.

“We have an excellent defense, we’re going to do really good, our defense is solid and we just have to be solid all around,” senior forward Farryn Townley said.

CSUN will still have to take caution because the Waves are also coming off an excellent offensive performance in which they scored four goals against Arizona, with each goal coming from a different player.

With their high motivation level the Matadors should do well according to Townley. She believes that even though Pepperdine is a good team the Matadors just have to come out playing with the same intensity they did in the second half of the Saint Joseph’s game.

After the game against Pepperdine, the Matadors will rest for a day then travel to No. 11 UCLA on Sunday. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
