Matador women’s soccer team can’t stop No. 11 UCLA

Los Angeles, Calif. – With two straight wins the Matador women’s soccer team looked to keep their winning ways alive against No. 11 UCLA.

Soon Northridge found out how tough it was to play in Drake Stadium, as the Bruins brought the streak to a halt in a 4-1 victory over CSUN on Sunday.

In the first half, UCLA broke a scoreless tie in the 12th minute when forward Zakiya Bywaters took the first shot on goal of the game and scored.

CSUN tied the score when midfielder Erin Kelly scored her first goal of the season off a free kick in the 34th minute that hit the top bar and fell behind UCLA’s goalkeeper Chante’ Sandiford.

“I was super stoked” Kelly said. “I’ve been practicing free kicks for a while, I was happy it went in.”

The second half was all Bruins as they capitalized on a few Matador mistakes to score three unanswered goals.

Bruin forward Sydney Leroux and midfielders Kylie Wright and Jenna Richmond scored in a 25-minute span that gave them the easy win.

According to CSUN head coach Keith West the loss was an opportunity to learn and reflect.

“We’re ok… one game does not define who we are,” West said.

And with only one day of rest after the Matadors played Friday, the team lacked energy as the game went on.

“We played a game Friday, they didn’t,” West said. “We had tired legs, a tired team, but we keep learning and our heads are up. It’s a long season.”

CSUN finished with five shots to UCLA’s 27 shots. The Matadors were also at a disadvantage in cornerkicks with the Bruins having a 15-0 edge.

Looking into what the rest of the season holds, Matador goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo, who had a career-high nine saves, is optimistic about CSUN’s chances at a title.

“We have a really good team,” Jacobo said. “We want it really bad. We have the heart and the players, we just got to put it all through.”

Game Notes:

There were two scary moments during the game for CSUN, one came after the Bruins first goal when CSUN’s Brittanie Sakajian received a kick in the face by Bruin defender Lauren Barnes. Sakajian didn’t return to the game.

At the 42nd minute, Matador midfielder Stephanie Galarze had a head-to-head collision with Bruin Chelsea Cline. Both were down for several minutes, but eventually returned to the game.
