Ed Asner comes to CSUN in FDR

Emmy-winning actor Ed Asner will be coming to CSUN to perform as one of history’s most-loved presidents in “FDR.”

The play will take the stage of the Plaza del Sol December 11 at 8 p.m. This performance is originally based off the Broadway play ‘Sunrise at Campobello’ produced by Dory Schary. Ed Asner is originally known for his role in The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Pamela Bock, director of marketing and communications for the Valley Perfoming Arts Center, said although Asner is known for his comedy, he also brings a strong dramatic sense to roles.

“I think that just how quickly the show sold out speaks to the amount of enthusiasm,” Bock said about the upcoming “FDR” show.

Bock said that her office was receiving calls about the Ed Asner performance before tickets went on sale.

Originally the performance was set for October 9 but due to scheduling conflicts, the show was pushed back to later in the semester.

“People were absolutely excited as can be for it and the date change really didn’t affect it at all,” Bock said.

Bock said that the rescheduling did not hamper ticket sales and cause much conflict.

“We sent a letter to all the people who had tickets with a new ticket with the new date,” Bock said.

Bock said those who would not be able to attend the new performance date would get a full refund.

“I’m happy to say that very, very few people couldn’t make the new date. And we were able to resell all those tickets quite successfully,” Bock said.

Bock said the show is sold out and that the theater will be at capacity, filled with members from the CSUN community.

“This is a great introduction into the kinds of names and kind of works that we have coming to the spring season,” Bock said.

Alexandra Blacker, director of marketing for windwood theatricals said Ed Asner is big figure in Southern California.

“He’s very politically active so “FDR’s” a good fit for him,” Blacker said.

Blacker said that Asner recently performed in San Jose for a week of FDR performances that were very successful.

“Californians love Ed Asner,” Blacker said.

Blacker said that Asner has traveled through many states for his portrayal of FDR.

“He’s been all over the place for this show. Everywhere from Vermont to Florida to Iowa to California. All over California too. We all know how big of a state it is,” Blacker said.
