Cold nights snuggling under a blanket, sipping on hot cocoa and roasting marshmallows over an open fire is what comes to mind when most think of winter. But for all of you fashionistas out there, winter time means changing your wardrobe by getting out those coats and scarves from the back of your closet.

During winter, it is necessary to wear a lot of layers to keep warm. This doesn’t mean you can’t make a fashion statement because of the cold weather.

This season allows you to snuggle up in your clothes and still look cute. Coats, scarves and boots are always a must-have during the winter. These items are versatile and can be worn practically anywhere.

If you are considering on investing in a new winter coat, keep in mind that a good coat will last years if properly cared for. A basic black coat is a must. Black is a complimentary color and will go with anything.

Here are a few staple pieces everyone should have to brave the cold season:

Over-the-knee boots
You can wear over the knee boots anywhere. They are a trend that almost everyone follows and loves. They can be worn with jeans, a coat, a blazer or even with some leggings and a sweater. Consider pairing them with a mini skirt and colored or patterned tights for a more edgy look. Over-the-knee boots vary, so you have the option of getting them flat or with heels.

Chunky knits
Texture is huge this season. Chunky knits will not only keep you warm, but are cute and fashionable. You can wear a chunky knit anywhere, from school, to work or even on a date. Pairing knits with jeans, leggings or shorts with tights is a great look for the winter season.

Military and menswear
Military-inspired vests, jackets and pants have been a huge hit this year. They are  bold fashion statements that anyone can pull off. Features such as bows, blouses, ruffles and tailored waistcoats can feminize this masculine style. Boyfriend-style jeans are also a great fit and can be worn regularly with a sweater or even a cardigan. They are both simple and stylish and can create a look that will match your personality.

Hot colors
To make your wardrobe last for seasons to come, consider your color choices carefully. It is always good to buy pieces in neutral colors such as grey, black or even camel. These muted tones give an ensemble a cleaner, neutral backdrop that you will be able to dress up with seasonally inspired accessories.

Winter outwear
There is a huge variety of accessories for winter such as scarves, berets, gloves, leg warmers, beanies and earmuffs. These not only keep you warm, but they add an extra an touch of style to any outfit.

For guys, it is important to match. Patterns such as argyle and patterned shirts with stripes look good with a brown or black leather jacket.

Pairing a tee with a vest or a jacket will not only keep you warm, but it’s also eye appealing. Leather jackets with a hoodie sweater underneath look really good on guys, especially with black shoes.

Boots such as Uggs are available for the gents, but it depends on your style and whether you like that type of boot.

A popular trend for men are combat boots. These are usually made from thick leather to keep your feet warm.

There is also winter outerwear available for guys. Scarves and beanies are a great way to keep warm and add an extra touch to your outfit.

Regardless of the weather or the season, always remember the best accessory to an outfit is confidence.
