CSUN to commemorate World Water Day

CSUN will host its second annual World Water Day, said Sarah Johnson,  office coordinator for the Institute for Sustainability.

“March 22, 2011 is internationally recognized as World Water Day, so we chose this date for our Water Day here at CSUN,” Johnson said  “World Water Day is a day of bring awareness to issues regarding water around the world.”

Johnson said CSUN’s Water Day offers the campus community information about the importance of fresh water and issues regarding where we get our water, how it is distributed and how it is treated.

The day will kick off at 11 a.m. with a screening of “Tapped,” a documentary which gives light to concerns related to the bottled water industry.

After the film, Tony Machado, CSUN professor of environmental and occupational health, will conduct a question and answer session.

“He (Machado) is considered an expert on water,” Johnson said.

At 12:30 p.m., the event will continue with presentations by two speakers.

Don Kendall, associate adjunct professor at UCLA’s department of civil and environmental engineering will present, “Water Supply, Distribution and Treatment in California.”

The next speaker, Fred Barker, P.E., waterworks engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will discuss the access and availability of sanitized water in developing nations Johnson said.

Prizes and refreshments will also be available at this event.  Prizes will include reusable water bottles, reusable travel mugs, tote bags made of recycled materials and pens.
