Do Snooki and the Kardashian sisters belong in an SAT question?

Even though many of today’s reality stars may never even have taken the Scholastic Aptitude Test, they have become one of the subjects of it.
Last Saturday, some students writing the SAT were given an essay prompt that asked them to analyze the relevance, legitimacy and potentially harmful effects of reality television.
Part of the prompt said, “These shows depict ordinary people competing in everything from singing and dancing to losing weight, or just living their everyday lives…Most people believe that the reality these shows portray is authentic, but they are being misled.”
Since then college hopefuls, their parents and many others have been commenting on blogs and websites about whether or not this prompt had any place on the SAT.
Some argue the question unfairly disadvantaged students who do not watch reality television regularly.  Others say you do not actually need to be familiar with reality shows in order to answer the question.
Is reality television an appropriate question on a college entrance exam?
