CSUN A.S. to celebrate earth day with environmental fair

CSUN will celebrate the 41st anniversary of Earth Day with a campus fair packed with entertainment, food, music and arts and crafts to bring environmental awareness to students.

The fair, organized by Associated Students, will take place a week before Earth Day on April 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Cleary Walk in front of Bayramian Hall.

“The Earth Fair will give the university and local community an opportunity to showcase sustainable practices as well as goods and services,” said Stephanie Galvez, A.S. graduate assistant of training and development, who is in charge of putting together the event.

The main goal of the Earth Fair is to bring awareness to students and faculty and let them know how they can do their part for the environment and what resources are available on campus, said Kevin Mojaradi, marketing and public relations director of A.S.

The event will include many booths from on and off campus that are environmentally themed, such as A.S. Recycling, as well as booths from campus departments, local businesses and clubs and organizations on campus such as the Sierra Club and Salsa Libre.

“We hope that students will take advantage of an opportunity to meet local vendors who have found ways to provide goods and services while also protecting our environment,” Galvez said.

The fair will also have a small farmer’s market for the first time.

Attendees can also expect food vendors and live entertainment from the Make Peace Brothers who will be performing from noon to 1 p.m.

Students will also be able to express themselves through creative arts and craft projects such as making crazy hats using recycled paper bags and making their own potted plants.

Students are also invited to make their own artistic contribution to an art wall that will be available.

The fair has changed over the years. It is no longer a simple informative event. It is entertainment-orientated, with music and food to give the event more of a fair-like feeling, Mojaradi said.

“It is also a great opportunity for students to take a brief break from the stress of their lives, have some fun, listen to music, meet new friends or hang out with old ones, “ Galvez said.

The day of the fair will also be the last day for A.S. elections and students will have the opportunity to meet candidates for A.S. president, vice president and senate, which is a great way for students to share concerns or interests with them, Galvez said.

There are still open booth spaces for campus departments, clubs, organizations or local businesses that would like to have a presence at the Earth Fair.

Every chance students have to see how their campus is becoming more sustainable or to showcase their own sustainability work is wonderful, Galvez said.
