W-Soccer: Matadors remain winless as Texas hammers them 5-1

The high expectations the CSUN women’s soccer  team have for the 2011 season took another early hit on Sunday as Texas handed the Matadors an embarrassing 5-1 defeat, dropping them to 0-3-0 to start the season.

Just like against Baylor two days before, CSUN fell behind early. Texas senior forward Kylie Doniak assisted Taylor Knaack in the 11th minute of the first half to open the score at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The Matadors fell behind 3-0 following a goal from Doniak early in the second half before finally showing some signs of reaction. Forward Melissa Fernandez scored the Matadors’ lone goal of the afternoon – and of the season so far – in the 46th minute off an assist from Heidi Farran and Stephanie Norton, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Unfortunately for CSUN, the goal was nothing but a tease. Doniak scored her second goal of the afternoon two minutes later to push the advantage back up to three again and midfielder Lexi Harris added to it in the 63rd minute. The dominant win was the third consecutive for the Longhorns (3-1-0).

Texas showed its offensive effectiveness by converting on five of the seven shots on goal it had. CSUN had four shots on goal for the game with Fernandez having two of them.

The good news for the Matadors is that they get to come home for the next two games. CSUN will be looking for its first win of the season on Friday at 7 p.m. against New Mexico at Matador Soccer Field.
