An early goal by junior forward Colleen Williams was all Dayton needed to defeat the CSUN women’s soccer team 1-0  in the championship game of the Boilermaker Challenge on Sunday afternoon.

Williams’ shot a rising blast from the inner edge of the penalty box into the top corner of the Matadors’ net in the 10th minute of the game for the game-winning goal.  Junior defender Alysha Mallon received the assist on the play.

The Flyers (6-1) had three shots on goal and the score before CSUN (1-5-1) even attempted a shot.  The Matadors’ first shot came in the 12th minute by junior defender Jessa Yukihiro and was saved by Dayton goalkeeper junior Katherine Boone.

Dayton kept CSUN junior goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo busy in the first half.  The Flyers had three shots, one on goal, in a one-minute span.

In the second half, the Matadors again allowed Dayton to put pressure on Jacobo. In contrast, CSUN, could not get much pressure on Boone. The first shot of the second half for the Matadors came in the 64th minute on a high shot by senior forward Heidi Farran.

The Matadors kept at it, but Boone was there to stop them every time. Farran’s shot in the 78th minute and midfielder Alex Barbara’s shot in the 85th were both blocked by the goalkeeper.

Dayton almost added to its lead in the 88th minute, but sophomore forward Katrin Loo’s shot hit the goal post.

CSUN finished second out of the four teams competing in the Boilermaker Challenge.

For the game, the Matadors had a total of nine shots, three on goal. Farran led CSUN with six shots, but only one of those were on goal.

Jacobo had three saves to bring her career total to 134, nine saves behind former Matador Leah Elliot for fourth-most in school history.

The Matadors have some time off before their next game: at Loyola Marymount on Sept. 23.
