A 6.0 earthquake hit Napa Valley at 3:20 a.m. Sunday, causing commotion and damages in the Sonoma County area. There have been more than 100 reported injuries, but no deaths.

For residents of the San Fernando Valley, memories of the 1994 Northridge earthquake are still fresh in their minds. For others the threat of the “Big One” is something in the minds of many Southern California residents.

Here are some tips to be safe and prepared in case of an earthquake.

The Los Angeles Fire Department has several handy tips from their website.

Create an escape plan for your family and plan a rendezvous point in an open area in case you get lost. Whatever you do, don’t go back into the house.

Keep an emergency earthquake supply kit handy. Most importantly, stock up on water, food, and first-aid kit. Keep a flashlight, your phone isn’t enough.

Communicate with the people around you, even if they’re not your family or friends. Who knows what kind of survival tips they have in store.
