Increased cost of Big Show passed onto students

Big Show ticket prices rose to $40 due to a $15,000 budget cut compared to the original budget of $200,000.

Leann Vincent, student leadership coordinator for Associated Students (AS) said the thought of the AS senate was, students who wanted to come would bear a little more of the cost.

Vincent said, the price went up this year, and the senate contribution went down because they wanted students to take on a little more of the price

This year’s tickets were sold for $20 until Sept. 21, compared to $10 in previous years.

In the past it was 100 percent subsidized, “Like it was when it was a little tiny show and it costs 40,000,” she said.

In students Big Show surveys, she said they wanted a bigger show and a more prestigious artist.

“We were fortunate to get LMFAO right before they blew up.”

Laidback Luke, will headline the event, where he will mix electro, techno and bass music.

Eric Planas, Associated Students (AS) senior producer, said the layout for the event will be similar to last year’s, when Dutch DJ, Afrojack, performed. Unlike two years ago, there won’t be any hip hop acts headlining or opening the event. Planas said it was due to surveys they received of students asking for more Electronic Dance Music (EDM). Two years ago Diplo and hip hop artist Big Sean headlined Big Show.

“That show was a little bit chaotic,” said Planas. “EDM doesn’t bring an aggressive element.” After that, a decision was made to continue with EDM for this year’s Big Show.

The view of drug use at EDM concerts such as Electric Daisy Carnival is not a concern.

“I strongly disagree with the images of EDM in the media,” Planas said.

As far as as food, various LA food trucks will be there serving students.

The event will also feature an art wall and light sculptures, as well as other interactive activities for the attendees.

“We want to try to keep it a little more of a surprise,” said Planas. “We want people to experience and see the production.”

New elements will be added to the stage area for this year’s Big Show. Last year’s show featured large video boards behind the stage for Afrojack.

For example last year, there was a total of 9,000 tickets sold. Planas said the AS expects the this year’s event to sell out too. 2014 marks the second year in a row that the total number of tickets has been reduced, from a high 13,250 in 2012 to 9,000 again in 2013.

Security will be provided by CSUN police and AlliedBarton Security Services in order to ensure students’ safety at the event.

Bags and purses will not be allowed.

Professional cameras and recording equipment are not allowed at the Big Show, but students can have their cell phones with them.

Some students like Kevin Medina, senior art major, aren’t going to Big Show because of the choice of music.

“If it was a rock band instead, I would go,” he said.

Others like Syeda Arab, junior psychology major, aren’t going because of the expense.

“I thought that it would be cheaper like it was a couple of years back,” she said.

The 14th Big Show featuring Laidback Luke will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the Oviatt Library Lawn starting at 5 p.m.
