LASD investigation into alleged CSUN hazing death set for DA review

The investigation report into the death of Armando Villa is completed and set to be taken to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office tomorrow according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.

The DA will review the report, which includes both the coroner’s and investigative report, and decide whether charges can be filed. After their reviewal the report will be made available to the public. This process should take two weeks to a month, according to Sgt. Barry Hall, lead investigator of the case.

The process has taken so long because of the highly publicized manner of the case along with the fact that the report is very “lengthy” Hall said.

Villa died of dehydration and hyperthermia on July 1 during an initiation hike with his fraternity in the Angeles National Forest. CSUN’s private investigation determined Pi Kappa Phi, the fraternity which Villa was pledging, committed acts of hazing and the national organization voluntarily surrendered the chapter.

The fact that the coroner’s report deemed Villa’s death an accident does not necessarily mean that DA will not file charges, Hall said.
