Women’s Tennis: Matador’s Sweep Youngstown State to Improve to 8-0

The CSUN women’s tennis team (8-0, 3-0 Big West) pushed its winning streak to eight games to open the 2015 season with a 7-0 triumph over visiting Youngstown State Monday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Matadors Tennis Complex.

The Matadors won two of three doubles matches and five of the singles matches in straight sets.

The Matadors were facing a tough Penguin team that won the Mid-American Conference and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2014. CSUN won in dominating fashion to continue their hot start with a 7-0 victory. At 8-0, the Matadors are off to their best start since 2001, when the team started 11-0.

CSUN won their first point in doubles play. Sophomores Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei won 8-0 in their match to improve to 8-0 on the season. They are 25-3 as doubles partners at CSUN.

Senior Criss Rodriguez and junior Jessica Warren won 8-2 in their doubles match to improve to 5-2 on the season.

In singles play, sophomore Vivian Lin was victorious in her first game 6-4, lost the second game 4-6, and won the third-set tiebreaker, 10-5, to move to 4-3 on the season.

Hsu was the second draw and won 6-4, 6-1 to improve to 7-1 on the year. Freshman Kiryang Kim won 6-4, 6-2 to improve to 6-1 in her rookie season.

Rodriguez won her fourth-straight singles match 6-1 and 6-2 to improve to 6-1 on the year. Poei won 6-1 and 6-2 to start the season 6-1 in singles play. In the last singles match Warren won 7-6 and 4-3 to complete the sweep. Warren is 6-1 in singles play this year.
