CSUN Baseball almost pulled off a comeback against Long Beach State, but fell just short, as they lost 3-2 on Thursday night at Blair Field.

Junior pitcher Calvin Copping received the loss, despite pitching six innings, giving up three runs, one of them which was earned.

The Dirtbags led 3-0 after four innings due to two wild pitches in the first and the second innings by Copping and an RBI Sac fly in the bottom of the fourth.

The CSUN offense was shutout for the first six innings of the ball game as the Long Beach pitcher only gave up one earned run, four hits and struck out five Matadors.

The Matadors scored their first run of the game in the top of the seventh, thanks to an RBI ground out by first baseman Albie Weiss to score catcher Dylan Alexander from second.

CSUN then scored in the eighth inning after pinch hitter Nolan Bumstead hit an RBI single to score second baseman Ryan Raslowsky which cut the deficit to one run. CSUN then had bases loaded with two outs later in the inning, but Weiss struck out and it ended the two-out rally.

In the ninth, the LBSU bullpen came in and did their job, as CSUN stranded the tying runner on first base.

Alexander and short stop Yusuke Akitoshi were the only batters in the lineup to recored two hits each.

CSUN has now lost four of their last five games after winning the previous six games in a row before that.

The Matadors look to even their series with the Dirtbags on Friday night, when the teams match up for the second of their three-game series. First pitch from Blair Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
