Track & Field: Matadors almost complete the Mondo Mid Major Challenge

The Matador track and field team completed the second part of their northern California road trip in Sacramento on Saturday, April 4 at the CSU-Sacramento Hornet stadium when they competed in the “Mondo Mid Major Challenge.”

In summation, the women’s team did great. They missed winning the meet by .33 points while the men were not so great, coming in fourth out of six teams.

4×100 Meter Relay:

Senior Le’Shel Vines, freshman Cydney Powell, along with juniors Lexis Lambert and Marie Veale took the top spot with a time of 45.57.

Womens 4×400 Meter Relay:

Finishing second in 3:40.79 were Lambert, Veale, senior Ronisha Vallery and junior Jenna Vincej.

Womens 200 Meter Dash:

Veale continued her winning ways in 23.84 as Powell took fifth in 24.90.

Womens 400 Meter Dash:

With a time of 54.15, Lambert finished second and Powell finished fourth with a time of 55.41.

Womens 100 Meter Hurdles:

Veale (yes again!) in second with 14.06 and sophomore Kim Dargel, in fifth at 14.56.

The field events is where the women continued to gather steam.

Women’s Triple Jump:

Junior Marissa Rossi came in first with a distance of 39-03.00. Junior Cydney Leath (38-11.75) came in second and freshman Niema Poindexter (37-08.00) finished fifth.

Women’s Long Jump:

Rossi placed second with 18-05.25.

Women’s High Jump:

Senior Lydia French cleared 5-07.75 to take second.

Fast forward to the final event.

The Matador women’s total was a third of a point behind North Dakota State at 125.33 to 125.00.

Both have top performers in the Discus throw.

The stage was set…

Women’s Discus Throw:

North Dakota State thrower Katelyn Weimerskirch, won the event with a distance of 164-10 for 10 points.

CSUN senior Mariah Counts clears 161-08 in 2nd to score eight points. Junior matador Monique Griffiths, (160-11) finished third with six points.

North Dakota States Emily Lesser (156-06) to place 5th and earn four points.

With both schools earning 14 points, the final tally is North Dakota State 139.33 and CSUN 139.00

The men had their moments while amassing 66.00 points to take fourth in the meet.

Men’s High Jump:

Sophomore Lohnnie Tape-Jackson won the event clearing 6-09.00

Men’s Triple Jump:

Sophomore Josh Webster finished second with a mark of 46-08.75.

Men’s 100 Meter Dash:

Sophomore Kiyoshi Johnson, took second in 10.78.

Men’s 200 Meter Dash:

Kenneth Stone (21.72) and Khalid Jones (22.30) finishing second and fifth respectively.

Men’s 4×400 Meter Relay:

CSUN seniors Stone, Carl Horsley, Jordan Taylor and Jones took second in 3:13.33.

The Matador track and field teams will compete again Saturday, April 11 at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.
