This fall semester just got less stressful with the grand opening of the Oasis Wellness Center on CSUN campus, built to keep students focused with the necessary tools that will help them balance their health and education.

It not only benefits students, but also faculty and staff for a different range of prices depending on the service.

There are all kinds of relaxing services to take advantage of, including massage therapy, acupuncture or nutrition counseling.

Oasis Wellness Center Manager Tiffany Shanks said there are multiple services that students can benefit from, and it only takes a couple of minutes to make an appointment through the Oasis website beginning this Friday. She also mentioned that same-day appointments can be made as long as there is availability, which can be found out by calling the reception desk.

“All the classes and everything that we are offering is on the calendar now; you just have to go on the website,” Shanks said. “There is a caption for calendar, and under calendar, on a day-by-day, is a month view that lists the different workshops and classes that are wellness related.”

A massage therapy session of 50 minutes costs $29 for students, $49 for faculty and staff. A licensed massage therapist takes care of the session. There is a penalty cost of $20 for a no-show.

An acupuncture appointment costs $25 for students, $49 for faculty and staff. There is also a penalty charge of $20 for not showing up.

Students can take advantage of private peer nutrition counseling at no cost as well as at no penalty charge. This service can be beneficial to student’s health, and faculty and staff can also benefit. The first consultation is 60 minutes, along with a 30-minute follow-up appointment for dietary analysis and to go over general nutritional needs.

There is also nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian for 60 minutes at no charge for students, but $25 for faculty and staff.

In addition to these services, there are other de-stressing activities that can help students gain energy such as nap pods located in the relaxation room, which require a reservation in person at the reception desk. These nap pods are designed to give students a quiet place to rest in between classes or even before getting back on the road for a long commute home. They are available 15 minutes prior to the Oasis Center opening time and 15 minutes prior to its closing time.

“The napping pods are pretty busy and so is the facility itself,” Shanks said. “We basically have most of the indoor seating full at all times of day.”

Evelyn Santana, who is a freshmen at CSUN, said she is looking forward to trying the services that Oasis has to offer and finds it to be a comfortable spot to just go in to sit.

“I have tried the nap pods, and they were pretty cool to relax on,” Santana said. “It is better than being in the library.”

CSUN sophomore Rudy Salazar said the Oasis center is relaxing place to lie down and work on his studies and sees it as a good addition to the school.

“I am excited to try the massages, and I think it is cheap,” Salazar said. “I have came to the Oasis like four times already and it was not crowded, so I hope it stays this way.”

The center is located at the University Student Union with operating hours Monday – Thursday from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

More information about the Oasis Wellness Center services, operating hours, guidelines, contact information, events and appointment scheduling can be found at the Oasis center website.
