ICYMI: Women’s volleyball falters on the road against Long Beach State

In their final match of the four-game road trip, the Matadors (4-14, 3-3) were swept by Long Beach State (15-5, 5-2) 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 at the Walter Pyramid, CSUN was out hit .188 to the 49ers’ .389.

Leading the Matadors was senior outside hitter Cieana Stinson with 18 kills (.395 on 43 swings) with three digs and one block. Freshman outside hitter Aeryn Owens hit .048 with five kills, both junior outside hitter Julie Haake (.300) and redshirt freshman opposite hitter Nada Dragovic (.000) each added four kills.

At 12-11, the Matadors were able to shorten Long Beach’s lead to just one, but a four point run put the 49ers ahead 16-11. At 21-17 a Long Beach service error put the Matadors within three, but that’s as close as they would come to victory.

The second set started close with CSUN on top but four Long Beach had tied the score. The 49ers quickly took their position on top with a combined seven point run, taking a six point lead at 13-7.

The Matadors brought it within one at 15-14, but once again the 49ers took their lead back. CSUN brought the lead within two several times, but Long Beach ultimately took the lead with a four point run at 21-19.

After keeping the first part of the third set close having the lead and tying the score several times, CSUN fell to three and four point leads creating an 18-11 Long Beach lead. The 49ers only allowed five more points from the Matadors, taking the set 25-16.

After their third straight loss, CSUN returns to the Matadome on Friday to take on the Cal Poly Mustangs at 7 p.m. to start a stretch that keeps the Matadors at home for six of the next nine matches.
