19th Annual High School Invitational
Students from nearly 40 San Fernando Valley high schools will showcase their art in an exhibition at CSUN’s Main Art Gallery. The gallery will include paintings, ceramics, graphic design, sculptures, illustrations and photography. The free event will run until Saturday, Jan. 30 and closes daily at 4 p.m.

The Migrant Tide from Syria
The Hammer Museum will host a discussion on how European countries and America is responding to the migrant situation. More than four million refugees have fled from Syria to the neighboring countries and Europe. The free event will feature a panelist of three guests including a Syrian refugee who goes by the name of “Yazan.” Seats are first come first serve.

Starting Wednesday, students will have just one month to squeeze in all of the Oscar nominated movies to prepare for the 88th Annual Academy awards. Stop by the CSUN box office in the University Student Union for deals on movie tickets. The box office offers discounted tickets to select movie theaters for students. If you didn’t get the chance to binge on this year’s oscar nominees for best picture, make sure to see the nominees that are still in theaters.

One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich
Come see the 1999 film “One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich,” directed by Chris marker. Enjoy an homage to the Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, which includes clips from Tarkovsky’s films, footage on the set of his last film, “The Sacrifice,” and some of his final moments of his battle with terminal lung cancer.

Riot LA Comedy Festival
Kick back and have a few laughs to end your first week of school at Riot L.A Comedy Festival. The event is similar to well-known music festivals, but instead of music, it features three full days of comedy. The event is hosted by the radio station KCRW and allows guests to enjoy more than 40 shows. Acts scheduled to attend include David Cross, Maria Bamford, Todd Glass and more. The event locations are spread throughout eight venues in downtown Los Angeles. During ticket purchases, attendees can decide which venue and comedian to see. 11th Annual Museums Free-For-All
Over 20 Southern California museum will open their doors to the public and showcase art, history and science depending on the venue. The one day event will allow free admission to select museums include Museum of Tolerance, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. The list also includes a museum in Orange County and Santa Barbara. Keep in mind that some museums don’t allow free admission to special-ticket evenst.

The Man Who Fell to Earth
Members of the Cinefamily, a movie theater located in the heart of Hollywood, will pay tribute to David Bowie with a screening of the 1976 sci-fi drama “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” The movie features Bowie as an alien who comes to Earth to get water for his dying planet. The theater continues the screening series for fans until Feb. 2. Tickets can be purchased online at the Cinefamily’s website.
