An illustration can show something that cannot be expressed with words alone. From American illustrator Norman Rockwell to Marvel Comics Chairman Stan Lee, illustrators have the power to illuminate by visually captivating their audience.

The spring CSUN Illustration Club Exhibition is an annual event showcasing the work of CSUN illustration students of all levels, from beginner to advanced.

“I want to encourage curiosity of the observer into the fields of science and nature; to provide information on the issues, solutions and different perspectives of our place in the universe; and to give the observer a sense of empowerment,” CSUN student artist Jessieca Cervantez said. “The knowledge and wisdom I’ve discovered with the help from my peers and instructors inspires me to create art.”

Cervantez designed the exhibit’s flier and said she is excited to be involved with talented artists within the CSUN community.

Graphic design major Lawrence McLinden is a member of the illustration club and one of the featured artists who curated the gallery.

“It feels awesome. I love having work on display and having the recognition,” McLinden said. “I love when people see it and I loved helping out with the show.”

The exhibit will include different kinds of artwork, including painting, drawing, printmaking, three-dimensional art, fiber art and digital media. The illustrations are intended for books, magazine articles, event posters, packaging and fine art.

Illustration Professor Laurel Long said the group focused on an ocean theme for the design of the exhibition.

“The students designed and painted a brightly colored mural, spanning two walls of the gallery, depicting a majestic galleon ship sailing upon a turbulent sea of swirling waves,” Long said.

Graphic design student Samantha Lopez is another featured artist. She said it is her first time being featured in a gallery.

“It feels pretty awesome and didn’t expect it,”Lopez said. “Every piece I submitted got in.”

The exhibit will be held in the CSUN West Gallery, Art and Design Center, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge, CA 91330. No reservations are needed to attend and admission to the gallery is free.

The exhibit will end on March 3. The main gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 8 p.m Thursday.
