If you are interested in embracing your competitive side this semester or simply want to experience something new, we will be introducing sports clubs throughout the semester weekly.

1. Fasmode Dance Crew

This club began in 2002 and according to Tiana Collins, the crew’s executive director and a communications disorder major at CSUN, Fasmode is one of the only competing hip-hop clubs on campus.

“We offer a community, push ourselves to grow and build up dancers. I’ve learned to lead, to work with other people, the ins and out of CSUN, and a lot about myself. The competing is a bonus to showcase what you’ve done,” Collins said.

The club mainly focuses on hip-hop music, but it includes a mix of dancers who are on different levels and from various dance backgrounds. They have also participated in dance competitions such as “Maxt Out” and” World of Dance.”

Auditions will take place during the first week of school and will be composed of two workshops in which students will be required to learn two pieces of choreography and perform them. After the new members are selected, the rehearsals will take place every Monday and Wednesday nights.

For more information, feel free to follow the crew @Fasmode on Facebook or Instagram or email them at fasmode@gmail.com

2. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club

According to Roberto Zaragoza, president of the club and member of two years, the purpose is to teach martial arts to men and women in order to show how it allows anyone to manipulate another person’s body even if they’re on the ground.

Anyone is welcome to join during the first weeks, Zaragoza said, even if students don’t have experience. There aren’t any fees to join and the only requirement is to get a physical exam, which is required by Associated Students.

The practices will begin Sept. 7 and take place in Redwood Hall, Room 251 from 8 p.m. through 10 p.m. Practices will continue on Monday and Wednesday at the same time throughout the semester.

3. Rock Climbing Club

Alexander Hancock, president and member of the club for two and a half years, said the club focuses on developing core and abdominal strength along with flexibility during the fall. Once spring arrives, they compete against schools such as UCLA and UCSD.

“If you want to get fit but the gym is not really your style, [rock climbing] is a really great full body workout without having to be bored at the gym,” Hancock said. “It makes you step out of your comfort zone and it is a very good way to relieve stress.”

Their practices will begin Sept. 14 and will take place at the Top Out Climbing Gym in Santa Clarita on Saturdays and also at the Boulder Dash on Tuesday nights. Dues to join the club will be about $50 per semester, which will provide access to both practices for 15 weeks. Equipment is available to rent, but it is recommended members bring their own.
