Walking through the halls at the Matadome, one can’t help but notice the individual who is doing laundry from morning to night, loading and unloading the washing machines, making sure student athletes are always taken care of.

His office is filled with athletes saying “thank you Izzy” when picking up or dropping off their team clothes.

For 18 years Isidore Gold has been CSUN’s equipment manager. Gold is responsible for making sure every sports team has the gear they need to perform at a high level.

This includes laundry, maintaining sports equipment, and inventory. He makes sure that the Matadors have their gear for practices and their team uniforms for games.

He loves his job and being around the students on campus.

“Basically just love being around the kids doing it non stop, keeping busy and loving sports is why I have been doing it for so long,” Gold said.

Gold said that before he chose to work at CSUN, he also was looking into working at UCLA.

“Before choosing I was looking towards a major here at school and I got in and then ended up doing this,” Gold said.

Throughout his 18 year career at CSUN he has worked under seven athletic directors and seen many gym changes.

“I saw it when it was a high school gym, and now it’s big time black and grey,” Gold said.

Gold started as a student manager at CSUN. They liked him so much that they offered him a part-time position. He did that for two years from 1999-2000.

“My boss decided he didn’t want to do it any more and I moved to the Kinesiology department and he recommended me for the job,” Gold said.

His job starts at 7 a.m. in the morning making sure that every thing is packed for team road trips. He makes sure the gear is labeled for the athletes and takes care of facilities.

Assisting Gold in the equipment manager department are students Betty Torres and Zuleyma Madrigal. They both enjoy working with Gold because they see the passion he has for his work.

Torres, a psychology major, said that it’s fun but also hard work.

“I really enjoy it, but at the same time he is very understanding that we’re students and gives us time to study for tests,” Torres said.

Torres said that Gold has no problem filling in if no one can come in. Her work duties depend on the shift. Morning shifts consist of getting the soccer athletes clothes cleaned.

Another member of the equipment cleaning team is Madrigal. Also a psychology major, she has been working with Gold for two years now.

“He makes dealing with laundry a lot more fun then it sounds,” Madrigal said.

Madrigal said that he is very hard working, he makes sure that everyone is good and that as students they are not too overwhelmed.

“Honestly that’s what we really appreciate from him,” Madrigal said.

Torres and Madrigal both agreed that Gold has a lot of much passion for what he does, from showing up early to work and leaving late.

“He has so much heart for it, it’s part of his life,” Madrigal said.

Gold hopes to be equipment manager for many years to come. His goal is to serve for 35 years if possible.
