CSUN’s University Counseling Services’ BLUES Project will host a variety of free events and workshops this coming week in honor of “Beat the BLUES Week 2016.”

The BLUES Project is comprised of a group of volunteer peer educators who aim to help their participants overcome depression and prevent suicide.

There will also be a free depression screening where those in attendance will get to take a self-assessment in order to screen for symptoms of depression. A counselor from University Counseling Services will be on hand to answer any questions and help those interested in accessing the campus’s resources for support.

After seeing a BLUES Project presentation his freshmen year at CSUN, program Vice President Enrique Ramirez was inspired to become involved and advocate for change in the realm of mental health issues.

“I thought to myself that this would be a great opportunity to educate myself about mental health and break those stigmas within my culture and really make a positive impact in someone’s life,” Ramirez said.

Other events include a film screening followed by a panel discussion, a tabling fair, and a workshop on learning how to “Improve Your Mood with Food.”

The exact location of these on-campus events varies by day and specific event, but include the Oviatt Lawn, Plaza del Sol, Thousand Oaks Room and the USU Theatre.
