Although the Honduran community of New Orleans often went overlooked by the mainstream media in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, providing them with some kind of aid became a necessity for the Central American Studies Program and members of the Central American United Students Association.
The damage wrought by Hurricane Stan and its subsequent floods and mud slides in El Salvador and Guatemala have also caused concern.
CAUSA and CASP and other affiliates have held several fundraisers to support relief efforts to help victims of both tragedies.
“We’re going to have a couple of more garage sales and split the proceeds between the victims of the hurricane in Guatemala and the flooding in El Salvador,” said Vanessa Guerrero, treasurer for CAUSA. “We raised $140 from our last garage sale.”
Those who want to help in the relief efforts can donate money directly via the donation box located in the CASP office in the Jerome Richfield Building, room 102, or write checks payable to CARECEN/GUATEMALA and send them to Central American Studies, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge, CA 91330-8246. Contributions to CARECEN are tax deductible.
