About 150 students gathered in front of the Oviatt Library Monday afternoon to participate in a viral YouTube sensation known as the Harlem Shake.

A Facebook event invite created by Chris Jackson, Rick Andrews, Josh Lin, Supo Yikes Ojeikere, Joshua Kelfer, and Konrad Sedochenkoff, was sent out on Sunday morning where more than 400 students confirmed they were attending.

“I’ve seen the videos and thought they were really entertaining,” Kanika Vig, public health major, said. “Once I saw the invite from CSUN students I had to run to see what happens.”

Students were wearing costumes, such as a banana, hot dog, cowboy, batman and even a custom made Deadmau5 mask. One of the students, wearing a hot dog costume, was an alumnus who heard about the event through Facebook and was eager to participate.

Russell Nygaard, who graduated with a music industry degree last semester, came running in his hot dog suit to be part of the video.

“I think it’s amazing that the song itself is able to make so much money and since I work for a music publishing company and this is my alma mater I felt like I needed to be a part of it,” Nygaard said.

The song “Harlem Shake” was created by a Brooklyn dance music producer named Baauer.

The Facebook invite said there could be more than one video and that the first video would be the most popular. However, some students who attended the event disagreed with the turnout and students’ performances.

“It was better than what other schools are uploading because they seem more energized, but they didn’t do (the dance) right,” Jacqueline Meza, civil engineering major, said.
