Matadors taking on Titans at home

‘ The Matadors are coming off a 0-0 tie and come home Saturday to a bad team that just got a big confidence-booster, Cal State Fullerton. The Titans were on a four-game losing streak which included three consecutive home losses and a total of zero goals scored, but they tied No 7 UC Davis 2-2 on the road Wednesday.

Still, their opponents have scored more than twice as many goals as they have, and the same ratio applies to assists. Fullerton is an abysmal 0-5 when they play at Titan Stadium, but, as proven by their latest game, they’re not half bad when playing away from home, the case in this occasion.’

Matadors vs. Titans
Time: 2:30 p.m.

Place: Matador Soccer Field, Northridge
Series: Tied at 12-12-2

Last Meeting: Oct. 2007, Titans 0 @ Northridge 1
Fact: While the Titans have been outscored 23-11 this season, they have out-shot rivals by 204-178.

Matador to watch:
Senior Ben Cox, forward

Cox wasn’t able to score against UC Irvine and his team got a loss. But the Matadors come home now to face a squad whose defense has given up nearly two goals per game this season. This is his chance. Cox loves his new position at the top, and Fullerton is the perfect opportunity to showcase his offensive talents.

Titan to watch:
Sophomore Celso Alvarez, forward

Alvarez is one of the few bright spots for the Titans this year. The forward out of Rio Hondo Community College has four of Fullerton’s 12 goals, plus a game-winner. Any sort of defensive lapse could end up in Alvarez’ fifth 2008-goal and spell doom for the Matadors.

What did he say?

Ben Cox, CSUN forward on the danger of overconfidence before an on-paper easy rival.

‘When you know you’re a better team, you can’t play down to the other team’s level. You got to keep your level up and the results will come.’
