Softball team to face off with rival Long Beach State

After starting off conference play with back-to-back losses, the CSUN softball team has won four straight, and will take that winning streak to Long Beach State this weekend.

Northridge, which now sits at 14-10 and 3-3 in conference, trails the 49ers (25-13, 5-1) by two games. Long Beach has won the last six meetings between the two teams, including three straight at Matador Diamond last season, ending the Matadors chances at winning the Big West Conference title and instead, giving the title to the 49ers.

Long Beach has been led by their two dominant starting pitchers, seniors Meredith Cervenka and Marcel Torres. Last season they were the co-Big West Pitchers of the Year and this season they’ve continued right where they left off.

Cervenka is 16-7 with a team-leading 1.63 ERA and 133 strikeouts. Torres is 9-6 with a 1.82 ERA and 97 strikeouts. Torres also leads the team with a .313 batting average and has five home runs and 27 RBI.

Senior Lauren Johnson has a .310 average and team-leading nine homers and 32 RBI.

For CSUN, multiple players have been key, starting with the pitchers. Kia Fennell leads the team with a 9-5 record, three shutouts and a 2.12 earned run average.

She also leads the team with 101 strikeouts and is one of only four other CSUN players to hit a homerun this season. Her eight RBI put her in a tie for second on the team.

The other starting pitcher is Erin Sigala who has a 5-5 record to go along with a 2.62 ERA and 76 strikeouts. At the plate, Sigala leads the team with a .385 batting average, but in only 13 at-bats.

Of the everyday players, Emilee Moores has a .319 average and Jan Moshier is batting .286 with a team-leading five home runs, 15 RBI, and .589 slugging percentage.

The Matadors lead the all-time series with the 49ers 38-34.
