Cross country finishes 7th

Both the women’s and men’s cross country teams finished in seventh place at the Big West Cross Country Championships hosted by Cal Poly Oct. 28.

The Matadors placed at the bottom of the list in the men’s competition, finishing last with 192 points. The Mustangs finished in the top spot with 29 points to give them their fourth straight Big West Championship. UC Santa Barbara finished right behind Cal Poly with 33 points. UC Riverside finished ahead of CSUN with 150 points.

Finishing in the top spot for the Matadors, senior Manuel Ruiz finished 27th overall with a 27:40 finish, giving CSUN 24 points. Junior Diego Fernandez (29:05) finished second for the Matadors and 43rd overall for 38 points. Jacinto Garcia placed two spots behind Fernandez for a 45th place finish with a time of 29:43. Juniors Jonathan Tan (30:31), Michael Stotland (30:57) and senior Matt Parnick (39:22) finished in 51st, 53rd and 55th place.

The Mustangs and the Gauchos placed four runners each in the top 10 finishers. Cal Poly’s Phillip Reid finished in first with a 25:45 finish, just beating out UC Santa Barbara’s Mike Chavez (25:47).

In the women’s competition, the Matadors competed against one more team, finishing second to last with 203 points. UC Santa Barbara finished strong once again, placing first with 26 points. Long Beach State was the closest threat but not close enough as they placed second with 72 points. Pacific finished behind CSUN, scoring 251 points.

Senior Julie Hancock finished first for the Matadors and 23rd overall for 23 points with a time of 23:31.

The rest of CSUN’s runners finished within the same range of time and place. Junior Cherie McPherson (25:15) finished in the 49th spot and Diana Rosete (25:30) finished in 50th place.

UC Santa Barbara’s Lauren Christman finished first with a 21:07 finish and Irvine’s Laura Olvera placed second with a time of 21:23.

Santa Barbara dominated, listing seven runners finishing in the top 10 finishers.
