Censorship, imprisonment, persecution and prosecution. In time of war, the U.S. government has gone to extreme measures to limit the amount of "anti-American" speak and sentiment. The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 and the Homeland Security Act of 2002 are two examples of this.

Model UN team wins nine awards

The CSUN Model United Nations team continued their winning streak at the American Pacific Conference in Anaheim on April 13. During the three-day competition, the CSUN representatives took home nine out of 25 awards, marking 36 wins for the team in this academic year.

Bill aims to allow CA to clean up air

A bill in the House of Representatives aims to stop California from implementing greenhouse emission standards stricter than that of the federal government. The Environmental Protection Agency granted California a waiver to be able to do so. The bill aims to overturn the decision.

MEChA prepares high school students for college

About 400 students from 20 middle and high schools visited CSUN on Saturday for the 10th Annual Raza Youth Conference organized by MEChA. The theme for the daylong event was "The empowerment of our community begins with you." "Our purpose is to inform students of the process of higher education," said sophomore Spanish major Angelica Amezcua, one of the main organizers of the event.

While his friends were out celebrating the New Year during winter break, Jorge Guerrero was sitting at home writing a paper in front of a heater. The paper he was working on, however, was not a standard five-page essay on topic X. It was a position paper he would present in a Model United Nations Conference in New York City two months later, where he represented, along with the rest of the 12 person CSUN team, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

Campus conduct system used to educate students

Unlike a governmental criminal justice system, the judicial component of the disciplinary process at CSUN is more educational that punitive. "The purpose of the conduct system, in part, is to get the student to understand and to explore why they made that (wrong) choice, and to get them to understand the consequence of that choice that they made, with the goal of trying to create within them the motivation to make the right decision in the future," said William Watkins, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students.
