Seventh-ranked Matadors sweep sixth-ranked Stanford

Seven proved to be a lucky number for the seventh-ranked Matadors in their season home opener Thursday night. Freshman opposite Tanner Nua served up seven aces and knocked down seven kills to fuel the Matadors' sweep against sixth-ranked Stanford 30-25, 31-29, 30-24.

Matadors go down fighting for first win

While most of CSUN's students enjoyed a nice long winter vacation, the women's basketball team just couldn't get a break. The Matadors are still fighting for their first win of the season and are now 0-15 overall and 0-5 in Big West play after losing their most recent game 67-48 to UC Riverside (5-9, 3-0 Big West) last Wednesday at the Matadome.

Franklin goes to Galaxy in first round

Sean Franklin, the Matadors' senior defenseman, was selected by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Friday. As the draft's fourth overall pick, Franklin is the earliest selection ever from CSUN. Head coach Terry Davila said Franklin fits the Galaxy's needs and he could make a contribution to the team next year.

Stork delivers!

As a volleyball player, Jeff Stork has won everything there is to win. As the head coach of the CSUN women's volleyball team, Stork said there's more to accomplish. "Playing-wise it was an incredible career," Stork said. "Coaching-wise my career isn't over yet and there's a few things left to accomplish.

Matadors sweep two in tourney to end season

The Matadors had their brooms out at the Matadome over the weekend. The CSUN women's volleyball team wrapped up the season by sweeping both of its matches in the Fremont Investment and Loan Invitational. The host Matadors beat the Fairfield Stags 30-28, 30-19, 30-16 on Friday and followed up on Saturday with a win against the Idaho Vandals 30-25, 30-26, 30-19.

Matador boxing team is getting ready to rumble

Excited and nervous, that's how members of the Matador boxing team describe their feelings toward stepping into the ring for the first time. The boxing team is in its first semester of existence as one of the Associated Students' sports clubs. The team consists of 22 members, five of which are female.

Growing Pains

The Matadors took a beating Friday night at the Matadome, losing to the Rice Owls 81-55. CSUN didn't take care of the ball, turning it over 27 times and giving the Owls 43 points, more than half their total, from the Matadors' turnovers. "They didn't beat us - we beat ourselves," said sophomore forward Morgan Pryor, who had a team-high 13 points for the Matadors.

Bonhevi blasts one for second Big West win

The CSUN men's soccer team got their second conference win against UC Riverside on Saturday. Freshman midfielder Mattias Bonhevi scored the only goal of the game in the 76th minute when he caught UC Riverside goalkeeper Charles Alamo out of the box and blasted the ball over his head from about 30 yards out.

The really big one that got away

The CSUN men's soccer team let a big one get away yesterday at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors had a two-goal lead, but it wasn't enough to give them the win against the defending national champions, ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. With less than a minute left in the first half, the Gauchos started their comeback, scoring their first goal.

Matadors battle back to win

The CSUN women's basketball team waited until the last minute to get things done at the Matadome Tuesday night. With just 41 seconds left to play, the Matadors finally regained the lead in their game against The Master's College. It was a lead CSUN lost one minute after scoring the first basket of the game and the Matadors then trailed for most of the night, at one time by as many as 12 points.

Matadors finish eighth in Oahu

The CSUN women's golf team tied for eighth place at the Kent Youel Invitational at the Kapolei Golf Course in Oahu on Oct. 31. The Matadors shot rounds of 307-316-311 to finish tied with Washington State at +70, 934. UCLA won the team title at +17, 293-291-297-881, followed closely by USC at +21, 294-301-290-885.

Matadors host Bakersfield for non-conference game tonight

The women's volleyball team will take a break from Big West action tonight to play a non-conference match against Cal State Bakersfield at the Matadome. The match is the first of a four-game home stand for the Matadors. CSUN has a 9-15 overall record going into the match, while the Roadrunners' record is 6-17.
