Discussion held on media’s effect on body image

A brown bag discussion on the media's impact on women's body image was held Oct. 8 at the Women's Resource and Research Center in partnership with the CSUN Women's Studies Student Association. Sociology professor Melanie Klein spoke to a group of male and female students about her struggles with body image, specifically how she overcame them, and the way the media impacts women's body image.

Former African pres. speaks to students

Antonio Manuel Mascarenhas Monteiro, former president of the Republic of Cape Verde, an island off the coast of West Africa, visited CSUN on Friday to give a speech to students about the state of Africa. "The reality is that Africa does have problems. Every day, millions of Africans face difficulties and injustices," Monteiro said.

CSUN recognizes professor with $2,000 grant

Many CSUN professors are often overlooked as significant contributors to the community outside the university, much less the San Fernando Valley. But business administration professor Norris (Rashe) Dorsey is challenging that perception after the university recognized his work with at-risk youth and awarded him a $2,000 community service grant.

USU holds CPR class

Neither the rain nor the cold weather stopped CSUN students from coming to the CPR workshop held by the University Student Union in the Lake View Terrace room in the USU, Saturday, Sept. 22. The workshop, which ran from 9-5 p.m., was sponsored by the USU and the University Program Council and required that students pay only $25.

Wandering past several bookcases in the Oviatt Library, students look for a quiet place to study, a computer from which to print out their assignments or for their friends in private study rooms. What students may not realize is that the campus library houses many special collections, such as artifacts from the Elizabethan era of the 16th century, which are exhibited in the C.

Professors work to green L.A.

It may be difficult for some students to understand that CSUN is far more than a place for learning. The exchange of ideas and information may be a substantial part of why students are here, but it's not what solely defines the university. Shawna Dark, professor of geography at CSUN, is an example of how the work of professors and students has influence outside of the campus setting.
