Matadors start playoff run on Thursday

Ivan Yeo May 15, 2007
After a brief two-year hiatus, the CSUN Matador softball team is back in the NCAA Tournament, and they won't have to travel far to start its playoff run. The Matadors will start its 2007 playoff run up North, as they travel to Palo Alto to participate in the Stanford regional.

Matadors swept by UC Riverside, on five-game skid

After Saturday's 18-1 drubbing at the hands of No. 17 UC Riverside, the CSUN Matador baseball team looked to deliver a much better effort against the Highlanders at Matador field on Sunday. The Matadors did just that, staying with the Highlanders pitch for pitch and hit for hit, but Riverside was still a step ahead of the curve, as they came up with the timely hits and its pitching staff held off several Northridge threats throughout the afternoon on their way to a 7-4 win, giving them the season series sweep over the Matadors.

CSUN gets to postseason for first time since 2004

To say the CSUN Matadors' softball team had a pretty good weekend is an understatement. First, the Matadors took two of three games from future Big West Conference member UC Davis at LaRue Field over the weekend, with one of those wins being a combined no-hitter thrown by junior Mercedes Lovato and freshman Amanda Pitzenberger, then as the team made its way back to Northridge, they quickly found out that they would be one of 64 teams participating in the NCAA tournament starting on Thursday.

CSUN gets win for home crowd

The CSUN softball team lived dangerously in its final three Big West Conference games against the Pacific Tigers at Matador Diamond, but when all was said and done, the Matadors were still standing. All three games against the Matadors and the Tigers weren't decided until the final inning.

CSUN softball sweeps Riverside

The recent surge of the CSUN Matador softball team could be best described by head coach Barbara Jordan. "We're peaking at the right time," Jordan said. The UC Riverside Highlanders became the latest victim of the Matadors' rise this past weekend, as Northridge swept Riverside, taking both games of a Saturday doubleheader by scores of 12-4 and 5-1, then taking the final game on Sunday 11-3.

Future looks bright despite postseason loss

The seventh-seeded CSUN Matador men's volleyball team certainly proved it could stay with the second-seeded BYU Cougars in its Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinal matchup Saturday night. However, trying to beat the Cougars in a single-elimination match, in Provo, Utah nonetheless, proved to be a daunting task, as the Cougars held off Northridge, ending the Matadors' season with a three-game sweep by scores of 30-26, 30-28 and 30-26.

Matadors steal two victories in Santa Barbara

Ivan Yeo April 26, 2007
The CSUN Matador softball team had a solid up in Santa Barbara this past weekend, as they took both games of a doubleheader with the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday before the Gauchos rebounded to take the final game the next day. In game one of the doubleheader, The Matadors had to wait three innings before they got on the board.

Matadors come up short

The CSUN Matador baseball team showed it certainly belonged on the same field with the host UCLA Bruins this past weekend. UCLA, however, managed to get the breaks it needed, and the end result was the Bruins sweeping the Matadors in three hotly contested games at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Matadors advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating USC

Ivan Yeo April 23, 2007
It was slipping away for the CSUN Matador men's volleyball team. In game one of its Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation playoff matchup with the USC Trojans on Feb. 18 at the Matadome, the Trojans just ripped off seven straight points and eight of nine sets overall to take a seemingly insurmountable 24-13 lead.

CSUN to face off with USC at Matadome tonight

Ivan Yeo April 17, 2007
If it's mid-April, it must mean the CSUN Matador men's volleyball team is embarking on another postseason run. For the sixth straight year, the Matadors will compete in the Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation playoffs. This year, Northridge, seeded seventh in the MPSF playoffs will start in its own confines, as it hosts the eighth-seeded USC Trojans at the Matadome in the play-in round tonight at 7 p.

Matadors get second conference win, but lose series

Ivan Yeo April 17, 2007
It took a while and certainly a lot of shortcomings, but the CSUN Matador softball team finally registered that elusive second Big West Conference win. After staying with the undefeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs for the first two games on Saturday, only to come a tad short in the end, the Matadors came back to win the rubber match in dramatic fashion, winning the final game 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, handing Cal Poly its first conference loss.

Matadors swept by Waves

Ivan Yeo April 16, 2007
The eighth-ranked CSUN Matador men's volleyball team will have to wait until its regular season finale to clinch a spot in the Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation playoffs. For the second straight match, Northridge saw its playoff chances dashed by another opponent, and it was the top-ranked Pepperdine Waves that delayed the Matadors' postseason aspirations, as the Waves defeated the Matadors in straight sets at Firestone Fieldhouse by scores of 30-25, 30-28 and 30-25.
