Women’s soccer wins home opener, loses to Fresno

The CSUN women's soccer team looked stronger, faster and more aggressive than their opponents as they dismantled the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 3-0 at Matador field on Aug. 25. The Matadors followed up the impressive match at home with a disappointing loss on the road.

CSUN men’s volleyball become head of the class

The CSUN men's volleyball team may not have been champions on the court this season, but they were number one in the classroom. Eight matadors were Mountain Pacific Sports Federation academic all-conference selections this season for maintaining a 3.0 or better, grade point average while competing in at least 50 percent of the team's games.

Two baseball pitchers drafted by Rockies, Indians

Two CSUN baseball players were selected in the 2006 professional baseball draft by the Colorado Rockies and Cleveland Indians. Pitchers Craig Baker and Jimmy Brettl were selected in the fourth and 39th rounds. Baker was chosen by the Rockies and Brettl by the Indians.

CSUN water polo player earns All-American status

A six-foot sophomore from San Diego put CSUN women's water polo on the map this year, earning an All-American Honorable Mention. Alison Brookes second season in 2006 tallied 25 assists, 47 steals and a conference-leading 72 goals to earn the honor announced June 6 by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.

U.S. military fighting wrong war in Iraq

While thousands of U.S. soldiers sweat and bleed in the dunes of the Iraqi desert, a much more dangerous enemy grows in the Far East. The invasion of Iraq, according to President Bush, was in response to the numerous weapons of mass destruction that the Middle-Eastern country had in their possession and the threat they posed to the United States.

Summers shines at Junior Nationals finishing second

A CSUN track and field freshman showed her throwing prowess at the USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in Indianapolis June 21-23 finishing second in two events. Jere Summers finished second in her age group in the discus with a throw of 159' 10" as well as the shot put with a throw of 50' 3.

No major surprises in 2006 World Cup

The 2006 World Cup in Germany has had its share of exciting moments and intrigue, but so far the outcome has been painfully predictable. The U.S., yet again, could not play its way out of the opening round. Brazil and Germany have been dominant and six of the eight teams in the quarterfinals are from Europe.

CSUN track and field athletes come up short at NCAA championships

Three CSUN athletes matched their skills against the best in the country at the NCAA Track and Field Championships June 7-10. Juniors Justin Johnson and Anthony Brown and freshman Jere Summers traveled to Sacramento to compete in their signature events. This was the athletes first time at the championships.

Matador Golf Classic raises money for CSUN athletics

Several CSUN staff and community members hit the links for the annual Matador Golf Classic June 12 to help raise funds for the CSUN Athletic Department. Participants included CSUN athletic coaches, alumni and other members of the community. The event was held at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley where the $200 cost of entry included course fees, lunch and dinner, and a photograph with CSUN mascot Matty the Matador.

New coach, players equals new CSUN soccer era

The CSUN women's soccer team will have a distinctly different look this season, both on the field and on the sideline. Keith West, who has been an assistant with the men's team since 2000 has taken over the head coaching job for the women this year. West signed 12 players and plans to add about five players.

World Cup 2006 set to kick off in Germany this month

Goooooooooooooaaaaal!!!!!!!!!! That's an exclamation you'll be hearing a lot during the next month, as the 18th FIFA World Cup begins in Germany on June 9, where 32 of the best soccer teams in the world vie for the sport's ultimate prize. The teams come from six different continents, including six past champions and six first-time competitors.
