U.S. Army tour event arrives on campus to recruit students

The Army College Tour recruiting event stopped at the CSUN campus on Wednesday to promote the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program and opportunities in the Army. The Tour travels to college campuses nationwide with eighteen-wheelers carrying helicopter simulators, humvees, rifle shooting stimulators and a 30-foot tall rock climbing wall.

A day in the life of an A.S. Senator

Over a month into the semester, Amanda Perry is on campus Monday through Thursday from morning until night. She was elected lower division senator, has been appointed chair of academic affairs, is the senate representative for the A.S. Finance Committee, sits on the Instructionally Related Activities Advisory Board and is a student representative on the Academic Grievances and Grade Appeals Board.

Provost’s report calls for tuition increase

CSUN will need to count on increased fees to balance the budget, an administration report presented at the Faculty Senate meeting on Thursday indicates. "After the budget preparation that we did last year, we are in good stead this year. We really believe that we need to count on a fee increase next year to balance salary increases as well as what we can anticipate-a downturn in tax revenues due to crash-pardon the word-of the housing market," Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Harold Hellenbrand's report indicates.

State leaders urge Gov. to sign CSU compensation bills

California state organization leaders banded together Tuesday at a Sacramento press conference to urge the governor to sign two proposed bills that would require the CSU and UC executives to notify the public of increased wages and benefits. Proposed Senate Bill 190 would subject the Board of Trustees to the Bagley-Keene Act that requires timely notification to the public of agenda items and discussion topics.

Student trustee answers to A.S.

Recent California State University issues brought about 30 students to the Associated Students Senate meeting on Tuesday to show support for the Dream Act and to address CSU Student Trustee Jennifer Reimer. With her recent support of the CSU executive pay increases and rumors of another 10 percent tuition hike during the fall 2008 semester, Reimer had plenty of questions to answer.

I've been at CSUN longer than I like to admit. I'm a classic six-year senior who claims every reason for my situation. I took a year off. I wasted a semester. I changed my major and I got mislead by an advisor. Regardless, here I am and I've got only twelve weeks left until I earn that degree and never have to set foot on this campus again.

Finance committee recommends magazine, club funding

The Associated Students Finance Committee approved to recommend funding for student organization campus events, student club representatives to attend conferences and lowered requested funding to their own proposals. The seven-member committee recommended that $8,000 be allocated to the A.

CSSA votes to oppose pay raises for CSU executives

California State University student leaders debated on increasing executive compensation, student tuition and other student issues at the California State Student Association (CSSA) conference on Saturday and Sunday hosted by San Diego State University. The CSSA Board of Directors voted to oppose a recommendation made by CSU Board of Trustees to increase executive compensation by 11.

A.S. increases funding for club supporters

The Associated Students Senate slightly increased purposed funding for student organizations after several club representatives showed their support for one another at the A.S. Senate meeting Tuesday afternoon. About 30 students attended the meeting, 18 of whom spoke during the open forum and asked the Senate to support student organizations and increase the funding recommendations made by the A.

Campus remembers 9/11 by pledging good deeds

Chabad at CSUN hosted a day of remembrance and pledging good deeds at the second 9/11 Mitzvah Marathon on Tuesday. Six years after the tragedy of Sept. 11, about 100 students, staff and community members pledged to do something good, and more than 30 of them donated blood to the American Red Cross Blood Services.

Chabad to hold event celebrating kindness

On the sixth anniversary of the national tragedy that was 9/11, Chabad at CSUN will host an event to offer students the opportunity to do good deeds. "It's a really great time to give back on a day so much bad has happened to this country," said Kimberly Erieg, a student on the Chabad CSUN Board of Directors.

A.S. Finance Committee leaves AIS underfunded

The Associated Students Finance Committee approved to allocate funds to five student organizations yesterday afternoon for upcoming events, but allocated only half of the amount organizations originally requested. The American Indian Student Association requested $9,490 for various awareness events, including the 23rd Annual CSUN Pow Wow, a two-day event in November celebrating Thanksgiving, which will be cosponsored by the city of Los Angeles.
