Two media vendors provide services, TVs to CSUN

The University Student Union Board of Directors approved a proposal by MTV Networks and The University Network to offer CSUN broadcasting services to various facilities around campus in Fall 2006. MTV Networks is extending its contract with the USU by offering to set up televisions and the necessary equipment to receive the broadcast mtvU at various locations at CSUN, such as the Pub Sports Grill, the Fitness Center, the USU Games room, the Satellite Student Union and Geronimo's.

It's spring time and the NBA playoffs are in full bloom. People are rushing home every night to watch games that they've bet on, debated about and possibly even fought over. As some teams advance and others are eliminated, everyone comes up with their own philosophies and theories as to why some teams lose or why players do this or do that.

CSUN drug-related arrests up; police blame outsiders

Drug-related arrests were on the rise last year, according to CSUN police and crime reports. There were 72 drug-related arrests near and on campus in 2005. In 2004, 37 arrests were on campus, and 24 arrests occurred in the residential areas surrounding CSUN.

CSUN students, faculty participate in May Day

Various CSUN organizations and faculty participated in an immigration march in downtown Los Angeles May 1 in what was known as May Day, or "A day without immigrants," to protest recently proposed tougher immigration legislation. CSUN's Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan, a group that seeks to advance consciousness of Chicano history by education and political action, organized about 550 CSUN students, high school students, local area residents and faculty members to participate in the demonstration in downtown L.

Black athlete grad rate up in U.S.; CSUN below average

A new study by the NCAA recently found that the graduation rates for black student athletes are rising nationwide. CSUN's black athlete grad rates are lower, however. The national student graduation success rate for black student athletes who entered in the 1998-99 school year as freshmen is 59 percent, while CSUN's graduation success rate for black student athletes is 43 percent.

Applicants receive invitations in error

Several high school seniors who applied for admission to CSUN for Fall 2006 were recently sent invitations congratulating them on being admitted to CSUN and requesting them to attend a banquet held for incoming freshman. They later received a letter stating that sending the invitation was a mistake.

CSUN community reacts to CSU’s Envision 2035 approval

With the CSU Board of Trustees approving CSUN's Envision 2035 Masterplan, CSUN officials and surrounding residents said they hope that the changes will improve the community and campus life for students. The masterplan document, approved March 15, sets down general growth guidelines for the campus for the next 30 years.

CSUN professor, alumni strive for public office, hope to inspire students to activism

Cell phone use pushes pay phones to verge of extinction

When asked where the nearest pay phone on campus was, Andy Posner, senior Spanish major, was clueless. He looked around confused and unsure of where one was. There was a pay phone 10 feet away from where he was sitting in the first-floor hallway of Sierra Hall.

Percentage of women faculty rises at CSUN

The number of women faculty members at CSUN has grown steadily over the years, according to statistics provided by CSUN's Office of Institutional Research. In Fall 1987, CSUN had 242 women in 876 filled faculty positions, 28 percent of CSUN's full-time faculty at the time, according to Institutional Research.

CSUN lets online university use building in Time ad

CSUN's Manzanita Hall was questionably used in a full-page advertisement in Time magazine for an online university's graduate program. The ad for Walden University appeared in the February 2006 issue of the magazine. CSUN's University Licensing - which administers permits for outside organizations that want to use the university's resources for their own purposes - had full knowledge of Walden University's intentions, said Karla La Rosa, manager of University Licensing.
