Theatre professor’s talents remembered

Professor Maryellen Clemons of the theatre department died on Feb. 7 at the age of 64 after battling lung cancer. She served as a faculty member for more than 30 years and acted as executive administrative director of the teenage drama workshop for high school students each summer for 16 years.

Fraternity rush events create lasting bonds

Spring rush events for the 12 fraternities in CSUN's Inter-Fraternity Council are not as big as fall rush events, but the fraternity brothers still go all out in hopes of recruiting new members. Each fraternity has something different to offer and puts emphasis on different areas, contributing to different philanthropies and holding various events during rush week to try and attract new members.

Greek organizations seek students

Greek recruitment during rush week offers people a good opportunity to get involved on campus, meet other people and learn what each fraternity and sorority is all about. There are over 30 fraternities and sororities on CSUN's campus and students interested in rushing can get more information through the Matador Involvement Center or by checking out the billboards for individual groups on campus.

Students help Jamaican deaf school

Three faculty advisors and 14 students majoring in deaf studies spent one week of their winter break volunteering at a deaf residential school in Jamaica. From Jan. 5-12, the group, who are either deaf or hard of hearing, stayed in dormitory-style housing.

Pep band fires up fans at Matadome

The Matador Pep Band made its debut at the Matadome Saturday, pumping up fans attending the men's basketball game against Long Beach State. The newly reassembled pep band, which had been missing since CSUN's football program was dismantled in 2001, was led by senior music industry studies major Brian Mellblom, who has been working since October to get the band off the ground.

CSU budget cuts affect enrollment

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's version of the California State University budget for the 2008-2009 year includes a $312 million budget cut, Dr. Harold Hellenbrand said at the University Planning and Budget Group meeting on Jan. 11. Hellenbrand, who is the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said the exact effects of the budget cuts on CSUN's $302 million budget are still unknown.

Gardening class helps exercise green thumbs

More than 100 people showed up to learn about rose pruning at the first class in the 2008 CSUN-al gardening series hosted by the CSUN Botanic Garden. Although a few students, faculty and staff members came to the Jan. 5 class, most of those who attended were local members of the community, said Brenda Kanno, CSUN Botanic Garden manager.
