Departments on campus scramble to find ways to cut back on costs

Departments on campus are looking for ways to decrease their operational costs to prepare for a shortfall in state funding, which could range from $12 to $22 million during the 2008-09 academic year. Academic Affairs has put aside a one-time lump sum of $5 million dollars to combat the impending budgetary shortfall.

California critical on REAL ID Act

The Department of Homeland Security released its final regulations for the REAL ID Act, which sets standards for U.S. driver's licenses. But California's Department of Motor Vehicles called the act unnecessary and may not comply. The 9/11 Commission urged the DHS to set standards for issuing driver's licenses in order to prevent terrorism and illegal entry into the U.

Women march against unfair treatment in Iran

Former prisoner of Iran, Sussan Golmohammadi, was a student at UCLA in the 1970s while her parents were in Iran during the oppressive Shah regime. It was at UCLA that she learned of the revolution that was taking place in her own country. "I met students who stood up against the Shah," she said during the International Women's Day march in Westwood on Saturday.

Inflation pressure may stifle tax rebate

A recent Bloomberg poll indicates that only 18 percent of estimated recipients receiving the one-time tax rebate from the federal government plan to use the money to make new purchases. The remaining recipients said they would put it in savings or use it to pay off debt, the poll shows.

CSUN alumna raises awareness on ID theft

Students are easy targets for identity theft, one the most serious consumer crimes in the nation, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Linda Foley, a former CSUN student, became a victim of identity theft in 1997 when she gave her Social Security number to her new employer at a small magazine.
